Accommodation
Finding a place to live
You are free to organise your own accommodation or we can arrange accommodation for you. However, if you are under 18 years old, the New Zealand government requires that you live in accommodation arranged by Queens Academy until you are 18 years old.
We recommend that all students under 21 years old stay in a homestay when they first arrive in Auckland. You can always move out and find your own accommodation once you have settled.
Please indicate your preference for accommodation on the enrolment form. For more information on accommodation in Auckland please contact Kevin our Accommodation Officer.
Accommodation Options
Homestay
Homestay is a great way to learn about New Zealand culture as well as the chance to experience the local lifestyle and practice spoken English.
New Zealand host families are carefully chosen for you to stay with. Your family will provide you with a single bedroom, at least two meals per day and clean bed linen and towels at least once a week. All homestay families are monitored by Queens Academy.
Cost of homestay accommodation varies from NZ$195 to NZ$220 per week and is subject to a homestay placement fee (refer to fees section). You will have to give your homestay notice two weeks notice if you want to move out.
Students hostels
Single or shared, fully furnished apartment style accommodation in student hostels is available within walking distance of Queens Academy and Auckland University.
Cost varies from NZ$140 to NZ$200 per week and a minimum stay period of 6 months or NZ$200 registration fee may apply.
Backpacker hostels
Some students choose to stay in one of the many backpackers hostels throughout Auckland. Backpacker accommodation is generally aimed at budget adventure travellers and visitors on working holidays.
Accommodation costs range from NZ$15 to NZ$40 per night depending on type of room (shared dorm, bunk room, self contained unit). Specials deals can be made for extended periods of stay. Two popular hostels are Auckland Central Backpackers and Downtown Backpackers.
Motel/hotel
Students can also choose to live in a motel or hotel if they wish. This is an expensive option aimed at family and business travellers and should only be considered for short-term temporary accommodation. Price varies from NZ$50 to NZ$200 per night and is more expensive in the summer.
Flatting
A popular option for students in New Zealand is known as flatting. This involves sharing a rented house or apartment with other people (not always students). Rent is normally NZ$120 to NZ$250 per person per week depending on living conditions and location. You will have to share the additional cost of power, water and electricity with the people you are living with.
